Best of 2011 World Beard and Mustache

On May 15th 2011, the World Beard and Mustache Championship was held in Trondheim, Norway.  As far as mustaches go, The World Beard and Mustache Championship recognizes six categories - Natural, English, Dali, Imperial, Hungarian, and Freestyle.  Each Mustache style is as distinctive as those who wear them.

Natural -The Natural Mustache may be styled but without aids.  The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5cm beyond the end of the upper lip.

This year's winner was the favorite, Wolfgang Schneider (pictured), who defeated the 2009 Natural Champion, Kees Lek at the German International Championships.  I think you will agree that Wolfgang was a solid choice as his mustache is SICK.

English - Styling aids are allowed in this slender mustache that begins in the middle of the upper lip with extremely long hairs that are pulled to the sides.  Tips are allowed to be lifted slightly, but the hairs are only allowed to be grown to the ends of the upper lip.

This year's winner was Switzerland's Tony Wiess who beat out American favorite Jeffrey Moustache (left).
This is the mustache style that led Gipp to Mustache of the Month of the Year at the 2009 MustacheMonth Convention.

Dali -Modeled after painter Salvador Dali, the Dali is slender with long tips and is either straight or arching upwards.  The hairs are only allowed to start growing up to the ends of the upper lip and styling aids are allowed.

The 2011 winner of this category was a Fin named Juhana Helmenkalastaja (pictured right), a newcomer to the finalist stand.  German Max Pankow, who took second at the last championship also took second this year.

Imperial - Known as the handlebar mustache here in the States, this mustache is small(ish) and bushy with tips that arch upwards.  According to Championship rules, the hairs of this mustache are only allowed to start growing at the ends of the upper lip.

This style is one of the USA's strongest categories and the States took first and second this year with Giovanni Dominice (left) taking first and Benjamin Juergens (pictured below) taking second in the categor
y that it a favorite among MustacheMonth participants.

Hungarian -The Hungarian style of mustache is similar to the Imperial except that the hairs of the mustache can extend up to 1.5 cm beyond the edges of the upper lip.  According to the World Beard and Mustache Championship guidelines, the Hungarian is "Big and bushy, beginning from the middle of the upper lip and pulled to the side.  The hairs are allowed to start growing from up to a maximum of 1.5 cm beyond the end of the upper lip.  Aids are allowed."

This year,American Bruce Roe ended his streak of third place finishes at the Championships and took first with his typically stellar stache!

Freestyle - The category for
those that want to be creative, the only restriction on this class is that the growth of hair must not extend beyond 1.5 cm past the edges of the upper lip.  The Freestyle mustache category is for all staches that do not fit into any other class.

American Keith “Gandhi Jones” Haubrich scored the rare threepeat and has now dominated this category in 2007, 2009, and 2011.  Pictured here is the fork and spoon stache that won his 2009 World Championship.

There were many great mustaches at the World Beard and Mustache Championships in 2011.  One of these days it may be fun to send a MustacheMonth delegate to the World Championships, or at least the Nationals.  I think with a little time and effort, MustacheMonth could be very well represented in any number of these categories.

Here are some other sweet mustaches that participated in the World Championships 2011 in Norway.
